Vamizi Island Mozambique

Things to do in Mozambique

Vamizi Private Island in the Quirimbas Archipelago is one of those remote desert island destinations you only read about in fairy tales and we now offer you the holiday you have always dreamed about, brimming with outdoor activities. There are so many different things to do on Vamizi Island, starting with its penchant for conservation of all wildlife and their habitat, and ending with some personal pampering in an award-winning spa.

Getting involved in some adventure activity on Vamizi Island is easy in a grand sort of way. If you are keen to see pristine reefs in their original rainbow glory, grab a fishing rod, don a scuba diving kit and fit on those goggles for a snorkelling expedition. This part of the Quirimbas Archipelago is a marine conservation haven where more than 350 species of fish swim and some 180 different species of incredibly beautiful corals can be found – an island destination that literally hums with life and beauty.

All of this is thanks to the permanent conservation team on Vamizi Island which plays a crucial role to ensure the protection of significant and endangered ecosystems and animals on land and in the sea. This particular Quirimbas island is an important destination for both the Green and Hawksbill Turtles, both listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)as either endangered or critically endangered.

You can join the environmentalists as they monitor turtles, dolphins and other wild animals living on the island. You can also go fishing, on a strict catch and release basis, out into the encircling reef beyondthe 12 km long crescent-shaped desert isle. Head for the kilometre deep vertical drop off just beyond this reef that teems with predator fish such as sailfish, marlin, yellow-fin tuna, giant trevally and wahoo. To date, fly-fishermen have been known to hook 12 different species while meandering the shores!

One of the most exciting things to do at Vamizi is to go scuba diving into a huge variety of dive spots right here in the Quirimbas Archipelago - a thrilling exercise because divers get to see sites like Neptune’s Arm whereHumpback whales and Whale sharks lurk amongst 400 other reef fish species.

For those who prefer to really chill, why not enjoy the daily sunset cruises on traditional dhow sailboats, or rides on estuary boats to experience a different way of seeing an amazing landscape? The water beneath the boat is so clear that you can see all the fish and coral beneath you whilst meandering through the mangrove trees in search of kingfishers and green herons. Or sail a hobie cat with the sea breezes tickling your skin and blowing your hair back?

Boredom does simply not exist on Vamizi Island where there is so much to do and so little time – go on, we can make this Mozambique island holiday break the perfect deal for you. Meander along the beautiful forest trails or beach walks, stopping off in deserted sandy coves for cooling dips in clear waters. On the way, look out for Samango monkeys and giant coconut crabs as well as a multitude of forest and coastal birds. Luxurious picnics can be arranged in various deserted locations around Vamizi Island -honeymooners love the lighthouse on the easternmost side of the island so go for the ultimate desert island experience!

You simply have to book a pampering massage in the Spa to balance your yin and yang, your body, mind and spirit. There is also an Ashtanga yoga teacher on hand to practise daily yoga with guests and a range of deeply relaxing or re-juvenating treatments to aid the relaxation process.

Where else can one take it so easy in such a beautifully preserved marine environment and yet find so many awesome things to do?
